During this period men went out and participated in the “barbarian virtues,” meaning they would fight the savages on the land that the savages occupied and knew so well to save themselves from the idea that the center white class Americans were dying out, saved their health from the terrible disease of neurasthenia, and proved themselves as men (Our Little Brown Brothers: Race and American Imperialism).
