According to the lecture Wilson proposed “the need for more African American playwrights. Additionally, he provided roles written specifically for African American actors and directors, ultimately his goal was to help create a stronger community of African American audiences. Through Fences he was able to show the daily life of an African American family and the struggles they faced. The difficulties they faced were due solely to their race. According to Theater and Race, “The concept of race goes beyond physical appearance. It uses a person's appearance as an indicator of expectations of background, history, status and behavior. The characters in Fences are considered stereotypically black and are not allowed to participate in sports or anything involving whites. They are not allowed because we look at their background and status and say they are not at the same level. This was a huge problem facing the black community. Finally nowadays we know that they are not inferior at all: the black community is on the same level as all the others
