It is not often that you, the black culture, come together on a cohesive agreement to work as a team. No one in African culture recognizes the achievements of their peers, but instead they try to discourage them. Furthermore, when times are tough for our race, we don't fight the problems together, but we fight the battle alone. In America, people have internal battles with themselves based on how they think others perceive them. The feeling of being wanted and accepted by one's peers is a must for a person's ultimate well-being. Especially African Americans are facing some questions within themselves when they are more than likely a minority in certain environments. For example, an African American student attending a predominantly white college would wonder, “Why is everyone staring at me? Why am I so different from everyone else? Maybe if I changed my appearance, I would fit in better? This is a lack of self-awareness and low self-esteem. In the book, WEB Du Bois in his book, The Souls of Black Folks, explained the reason for this lack of self-confidence of the entire race. He stated that African Americans are "born with a veil and gifted with second sight into the American world, a world that provides him with no true self-awareness, but only allows him to see himself through the revelation of the other world." But how can we expect to be respected by others if we don't respect ourselves? To respect someone else you must first have respect for yourself. This is often overlooked by many people, but it is important to help others and especially those of our own kind. Otherwise the world will continue to be as it is and none of our problems will be solved. Instead we will continue to have this society in which everyone hates their own kind, and after a while those hatreds grow and become more bitter.
