Topic > Examples of Resistance to Change - 1750

Staff maintained a short-term focus while complaining about the additional work required to implement the program. The statement “we have always done it this way” remained the theme of every PBIS meeting, without recognizing that the school must change together with the population. This rigidity can make implementing change more difficult and potentially lead to failure. Overcoming Resistance to Change As reported by Harakas (2013), a key to reducing resistance to change is to increase employee motivation. The PBIS leadership team couldn't seem to find a way to motivate staff to accept the changes needed to implement the program. However, over time the outcome of the changes stimulated the self-determination of staff to embrace the PBIS program. These staff went from completely resisting any changes in their daily routine to suggesting further changes that would improve the learning environment for both students and staff.
