Children who said they were victims of bullying reported greater loneliness and difficulty making friends. Additionally, these victims tend to be more anxious and socially withdrawn because they are nonthreatening and unlikely to retaliate. In a recent study, it was reported that children who are victims of bullying are more likely to have poorer physical and mental health during adolescence. Therefore, bullying can significantly affect self-esteem in middle and late childhood. Being bullied during this time period, I understand the long-term effects and how it can deteriorate a child's self-esteem. Because I was teased by colleagues, I always felt insecure and weak. I had no confidence and always felt alone due to lack of friends. Because I would never stand up for myself, the torment seemed to get worse until I changed schools.
