Final DocumentDid the 1960s counterculture have a huge impact on the United States? Counterculture is known as the major cultural event that began in the United States and spread throughout the world. This countercultural movement gained great speed and became the revolutionary path for the people and government of the United States during the military invasion of Vietnam. By mid-March 1961 the John Birch Society had well over 95,000 members. This company was known as the despicable joke of Republican conservatism. Because the Society was taken in this way, sentiment toward the Society contributed to the defeat of the 1962 election and the defeat of the 1964 national election. The Kennedy administration remained fully committed to the Cold War policy efforts that were still in act. effect of the Truman and Eisenhower administrations. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson visited Saigon in May 1961. During this visit he declared that a man named Diem was the Churchill figure of Asia. Kennedy's policy against South Vietnam assumed that Diem and his followers must overcome and defeat the guerrilla war without assistance. The US government viewed America's involvement in the Vietnam War as the only way to end the communist uprising in South Vietnam. The North Vietnamese government and the Viet Cong wanted to reunify all of Vietnam only under communist rule . On July 23, 1962, the nations gathered to sign an agreement to respect Laos' choice to remain a neutral country. During this time Mexican-American college students were against the war in Vietnam and formed a committee known as the Chicano Moratorium Committee. There was great concern about the inequality of the gen...... middle of paper...... put it at the center and the metaphorical “war machine” continued its devastating path. I'm all for the 60's and don't have many bad things to say except you can really see how corrupt our government was in those times. If people didn't stand up and speak up, imagine how much worse our government would be today. If the counterculture movements of the 1960s had never taken place, where would our nation be today? I thank all the brave men and women of every race, ethnicity, and creed who have stepped up to give me the voice I have today. I probably would have been a Mario Savio if I had been around in the 60s. So many unjust acts have occurred and many have never been corrected. The only negative thing I can say about the 60's counterculture is that I don't agree with drugs, free sex or even some of the violent riots and protests that took place.
