Topic > Absolute Control in the Novel 1984 by George Orwell

In the novel 1984 from the beginning of the book propaganda has been used by the Party to have absolute control over its people. The Party has used a variety of techniques to maintain its power. Television screens, child spies and the thought police. It is important to underline that the Party's first task is to break down the people's self-confidence. They focus on destroying people's trust in their common sense, ability to make their own decisions, and intelligence. The way they party is through what they call doublethink. This is propaganda that suggests that if people have other thoughts, then what the Party says is a crime because that is not what the "truth" is. Telescreens are used to instill fear in the people of Oceania. place you could be more certain that the television screens were being watched continuously” (107) From this quote you can clearly see that there was no place to hide from the Party. Every time you go they have eyes and ears on everything you do or say. This put fears into people's lives of thinking that the Party was right and in control. A perfect example of instilling fear in people was when Winston wrote in his diary “Down with Big Brother” (18) and began to panic because he feared that the telescreen had seen what he had written. The television screens were also used to spread false lies and news that brainwashed the citizens of Oceania. The Party decides what exactly to say to the public, even if it is not accurate. The Ministry of Truth is responsible for publishing and informing the Party. The citizens of Oceania were constantly influenced by propaganda. "And if everyone else accepted the lie imposed by the party, if all the documents told the same story, then the lie would disappear... into the middle of the paper... it buried and tortured its victims with their worst fear. Room 101 .No one was released from the Ministry of Love until you believed what the Party wanted you to believe food the people got. If you were part of the Outer Party you would have tasted second hand food and the proletarians would have practically starved, but if they had decided to rebel they would have been tortured, so they would have continued to obey the Party is clearly responsible for what goes forward and the only way to succeed is through propaganda and fear. The Party instills fear in citizens making them unable to rebel in fear for their lives. “But it was fine, everything was fine, the fight was over. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother.”(298)
