THESIS STATEMENTThroughout the epic of the Odyssey the theme of father like son is demonstrated through Telemachus following in the footsteps of his father (Odysseus).PURPOSE STATEMENTIt is evident that through extensive research on the Odyssey, Telemachus evolves into a character similar to his father Odysseus in this epic. INTRODUCTION Imagine ten grueling years of constant slaughter in war. After all the horror you face traveling across violent waters: battling a sea monster, traveling to the underworld, and angry deities that attempt to wreak havoc wherever you go. All this is in search of reuniting with your loved ones. A brave Greek warrior, Odysseus, encounters all these circumstances. His son longs for him to return home. This son of yours is in a nervous state. He has no father figure in his life and is unable to protect his mother in their precarious situation. The Odyssey tells the gripping story of the intelligent Greek hero Odysseus. He has many terrifying adventures in his long-awaited return to his kingdom, Ithaca. In this epic, Odysseus' son, Telemachus, becomes the man his father is and demonstrates the personality traits that Odysseus possesses. Telemachus must overcome his fear of undertaking journeys to reunite his family. Odysseus and Telemachus share a love and appreciation for Penelope together. Both started out as impulsive men and later had to learn patience in panic situations. “He is like his father Odysseus, in that he is loyal and disgusted by evil. He too, like his father, is willing to fight for his freedom. (Pope 45) Telemachus is described in comparison to Odysseus: they are equally devoted in life to Penelope and have a great will to overcome obstacles in their lives to reunite with each other....... middle of paper ... ...we weren't sure if we would take his father's place. Odysseus learns to act wisely and not impulsively through his adventures. “All his past training in patience, caution, and self-control is now necessary to help him do his part…” (Walker 76). From the past obstacles that Odysseus had to overcome on his journey home to Ithaca, he went from acting impulsively to thinking about his previous strategies for attacks and battles. CONCLUSION In Homer's Odyssey the theme of father like son is demonstrated. Telemachus becomes the man his father (Odysseus) is by acquiring the personality traits he has and evolving into a courageous and brave character, as his father was. Odysseus and Telemachus both embark on a journey to reunite their families; they both feel great love and appreciation for Penelope and go from being impatient and impulsive to patient.
