Physicians do not usually practice in isolation but benefit from the expertise of many other medical professionals and staff members who assist them in caring for patients. Mutual respect and effective communication are other fundamental elements of an effective teamwork model and with the new age of technology they are somewhat in danger. With the age of technology and dependence on the Internet and email communication, maintaining mutual respect and effective communication has become more difficult. Another study on professionalism highlights that although universal expectations and standards have been outlined in existing codes of ethics and conduct within academic medicine, to date, there are few professional development programs that currently teach faculty and to residents the ethics of appropriate educational relationships between teaching staff and students, interns, residents, researchers and other trainees."
