Humans are no strangers to war. They fought for freedom. They fought for the land. They fought for resources. Israel became a state in 1948 with the help of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. They thought that the process behind the creation of the Nation of Israel was that it was the original Jewish homeland. The Jewish people desperately wanted a country to call their own because of the Third Reich. Germany, under Hitler's reign, had destroyed many homes and displaced Jewish families. The Arabs were angry because they had lived there for many generations. Samuel Hazo, in “For Fawzi in Jerusalem,” writes about a narrator who has a conversation between the narrator who is obviously educated and someone who is middle or upper class and an Arab shoe shiner named Fawzi. The narrator is most likely Jewish. Samuel Hazo was greatly influenced by the 1948 Arab and Israeli war and believes that resentment over the loss of one's land is justified. Figurative language is an aspect of the poem that reflects the impact of that war on Samuel. The narrator of the poem is influenced not only by the war but also by the conversation between him or her and Fawzi, the shoe shiner. In the very first stanza, the narrator is “heading [toward] Columbus' mistake / where life will never be the same” (Hazo 1). The causes of immigration vary, but the most likely reason for the narrator's move is due to the high instability of the Middle East region. Hazo's quote is also a metonym for the Americas because Columbus “discovered” the Americas by accident while looking for a shortcut to India Varela 2 in 1452. The narrator is emigrating to the Americas and most likely to the United States of America. The fact that this…middle of paper…thought process is unclear due to the simple fact that the human body will feel threatened by such an event, whether it is a verbal argument or a physical confrontation, and will rely on instinct rather than clear and conscious thinking. A flashback, on the other hand, creates a sense of wisdom because it has been thought through. When you think carefully about an event, you think your memory will deepen, causing your emotions to be more under control. This flashback is important in creating the mood of the poem. Hazo was a supporter of the resentment felt by Arabs following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. This support shines through in the poem "For Fawzi in Jerusalem". It was seen in the figurative language, rhyme scheme, and use of flashback in the poem. People will be reflections of their past events and then create a future based on those events.
