Too Good What would humanity achieve without the need for technology? In the 21st century, technology has provided a wide platform to people and is used for various reasons such as shopping, work, entertainment, education and communication across the globe. Although we use electronics every day to make our lives easier, the excessive use of technology has created an addition in society. In a recent study, 52% of teens say social media has improved their friendships (Wallace). While social media and all technology in general is often used for positive reasons, it has also been shown to cause major problems even within close relationships. Teens feel obligated to be careful and monitor their social media accounts. The concept of Internet safety is often taught to teenagers as early as secondary school, however, recent research has shown that the teachings are not effective. Problems that arise from parents ignoring what their children post online include cyberbullying and sexting; which are common negativities to which minors are subjected in recent years. The topic of children harassing other children via social media has also become a sensitive topic. Cyberbullying has gotten so out of control that young people are starting to take their own lives because they can't handle the hate. Teens like Jamey Rodemeyer, a 14-year-old who took his own life after being physically bullied at school and harassed online about his sexuality (Hughes). These types of problems could be prevented if parents were more aware of exactly what their children were posting on social media and limited their access to companies that used social media as a way to advertise their brand. Social media has given professionals a more efficient way to network with others around the world. It also helps connect those who share similar interests and build new relationships. Furthermore, social media is easily manipulated and obsessed. 53% of children aged 8 to 12 own a tablet and 63% of them have a smartphone (Wallace). As a result, children spend more time in their rooms in front of computers than outside doing physical activities and spending time with friends and family. The phrase "let kids be kids" has changed from letting kids play outside to letting kids use their tablets all day. Families are slowly but surely being destroyed by the use of technology and they aren't even aware of it. Parents use their children to get likes on sites like Facebook in the hope that any video they post will go viral and embarrass their children. In 2014, a mother was arrested and charged with child abuse for posting a video of herself beating her son for being involved in gang activity. The video has gone viral, seen by police and Michigan prosecutor David Leyton, who argues that the beating "went beyond what is a reasonable level of parental discipline" ("Facebook video leads to child abuse charges for Flint's mother"). spent on
