The sale of indulgences was an idea the church created to help finance papal projects such as the Sistine Chapel ceiling paintings. In essence, the idea of selling indulgences was to guarantee the buyer entry into Paradise. Luther saw it as a corrupt scam, he argued that the Pope and the Church had no control over how long people stayed in purgatory and their sins. Eventually people came to their senses and stopped buying indulgences, causing indulgence sales to decline. Another idea expressed in the “95 Theses” was “A priesthood of believers.” This means that people do not need a priest to bring their request to God and encourages believers to read the Bible and take part in the affairs of the church and government.
