Place Criminology Hot spot policing is based on the idea that certain criminal activities occur in particular areas of a city. According to researchers, crime is not widespread in the city but is concentrated in small places where half of criminal activities occur (Braga chapter 12). Additionally, many studies have shown that hot spots show significant positive results, suggesting that when police officers focus their attention on small, high-crime geographic areas they can reduce criminal activity (Braga, Papachristo, and Hureau I press). According to researchers, 50% of calls received by emergency centers are usually concentrated in less than 5% of locations in a city (Sherman, Gartin, & Buerger, 1989; Weisburd, Bushway, Lum, & Yang, 2004). This means that crime often occurs at street level and not at neighborhood level. Thus the police can target a considerable proportion of city crime by focusing on a limited number of high-crime locations (see Weisburd & Telep, 2010). In a meta-analysis of experimental studies, the authors found significant advantages to the hot spot approach in treatment compared to control areas. They concluded that fairly strong evidence demonstrates that hot spot control is an effective crime prevention strategy (Braga (007). Importantly, there was little evidence to suggest that spatial displacement was a major concern in interventions on hot spots.Crime has not simply moved from hot spots to nearby areas (see also Weisburd et al., 2006). hot and what police officers should do to effectively reduce crime. Since police officers are supposed to spend time in these places, it is essential to know what the offenders and geographical areas should be, even if the ceasefire operation. was conducted at city level. In the Boston intervention, the deterrent message was addressed only to a limited and not general audience, furthermore the operation was conducted by establishing explicit cause-effect links between the behavior of the target population and the of the authorities (Braga). et al., 2001, pp. 201-202). The authors stated that the implemented program was credible because it was realistic to believe that police officers could target gang members living and committing crimes in hot spots. For this reason, although evaluations use the entire city as a unit of analysis, programs are actually more focused on specific offenders and geographic areas within these broader contexts. They also have much in common with other effective geographically focused policing strategies.
