We have all been in a situation where we immigrated to a new country for different reasons regarding a better future or education. In the book Jade of Peony, Wayson Choy describes the struggle of a Chinese family as they settle in Canada, with the new generation of children born here, the family struggles to keep their children connected to Chinese customs and traditions as they adapt to this new country. Chinese culture needs to be more open-minded as it limits the potential of the future generation. The limitations of Chinese culture are seen through relationship expectations, education, gender roles, and work. First, relationship expectations in Chinese customs and traditions have been strongly maintained. The daughters of the Chinese family were considered a disgrace to the family. The sons of the family received more honor than the daughters. Furthermore, some daughters were even discriminated against. “If you want a place in this world…don't be born a girl” (Choy 27). The girls in the Chinese family were considered useless. They were always despised in a family; they felt as if girls could not provide wealth to a family. Chinese society is throwing away its little girls at an astonishing rate. For every 100 girls registered at birth, there are 118 baby boys, in other words, nearly one-seventh of China's baby girls disappear (Baldwin 40). The parents of the Chinese family had a preference for boys as they thought; boys could work and provide the family income. Because of Chinese culture's preference for having boys, girls often had no right to live. In the Chinese ethnic group, the family always obeyed the elder's decision. When the family was trying to adapt to the new country and they were trying… middle of the paper… the king would do it in the same field. Therefore, Chinese culture resists the potential of younger generations, due to gender roles and jobs. In conclusion, we see the prohibitionism of Chinese culture by looking at relationship expectations, education, gender roles and jobs. Chinese culture needs to be cultivated more as it limits the capabilities of the new generation in Canada. In the book The Jade of Peony, Wayson Choy describes the difficulties of a Chinese immigrant family, as they try to follow two cultures to adapt in a new country like Canada, but still cling to the ancient traditions of China, the children of the family have struggled while trying to follow these two cultures. We have all been in a similar situation where we immigrated to a new country to seek a better future where we have a better lifestyle and education, to help our family grow.
