ICFLThe WHO (World Health Organization) developed the ICF in order to provide a uniform and standardized language that can be used to describe health-related functions and areas at international (Stucki and Rauch 2010). The ICF addresses problems previously faced by healthcare professionals regarding the lack of integrity between human functions and disabilities, making it difficult to build a comprehensive rehabilitation and research program (Stucki and Rauch 2010). The International Classification of Impairment, Disability and Handicap (ICIDH), the model used before the ICF, has been strongly criticized for the definitions of impairment, disability and handicap used in that model and for focusing more on the consequences of the disorder or illness and disability rather than the fact that the environment also plays a role in a person's level of disability (Davis and Madden 2006). In contrast, the ICF is a biopsychosocial model that describes the human being within the physical, social and psychological environment (Mittrach et al 2008). However, a proper process is needed to educate healthcare professionals regarding its use. It helps document the baseline health status of patients and correlating it with goals provided a systematic idea of the rehabilitation process. In writing this essay it was useful to consider Leena's case, which provided a practical perspective of how ICF, goal planning and rehabilitation can be blended together and bring out a standard format, taking into account not only the physical and functional state but the entire individual with his contextual and environmental factors. As a physiotherapist, working in the rehabilitation team using the ICF will give me the opportunity to work holistically and see my patient with his complete health status. Recognizing this and implementing a comprehensive rehabilitation protocol will help me achieve a positive outcome.
