Theorists such as Erikson and Kohlberg developed theories to provide insight into the reasons behind how adolescents behave and the process in which they process their information. The concept of identity is more complex than simply how individuals identify themselves. It involves the perceived perceptions of their peers as well as a combination of experiences and values. For the adolescent, personal identity is at a crucial stage of development as he or she seeks to establish his or her place in the world.
