Beckham states in her essay “Miss Ivors is described as a “loquacious and outspoken” nationalist, who attacks not simply Gabriel as a man, but also as Irish. Ivors mocks Gabriel for writing book reviews under the less than effective pseudonym “GC” for The Daily Express, a unionist publication” (Beckham, 80). Ivors stands up for what he believes in and is making it known, which is not much silenced of a female character like Norris is claiming. What is silenced is her authority, she is seen as surly or aggressive for no reason. Joyce created her character to be a feminist, but once again created Gabriel to degrade and silence her. Miss Ivors is simply not simply a grumpy character who is angry at Gabriel because she is jealous. He represents something he believes in and that is his country. You wouldn't understand it as a reader because of the anti-feminist view Gabriel casts on whatever he has to say. Again this is where you see Joyce is on both sides of femininity and
