I don't know about you, but some of my favorite gifts are the ones made just for me. It could be my name engraved on a piece of jewelry or a calendar full of family photos. Quite simply, these items are the most cherished because they were carefully designed for me. The precision medicine arena is simplistic in spirit, but the technology to deliver this medicine is extremely complex. As the years pass, the ability to identify the problem and develop treatments is evolving rapidly. Unfortunately, for many sufferers of chronic or life-threatening diseases such as cancer, the pace of science cannot move fast enough. The benefits of precision medicine, three technologies that enable precision medicine, and the field of personalized medicine will be discussed. Precision Medicine According to Christensen, Grossman, and Hwang (2009), precision medicine is part of a continuum and is “the provision of care for diseases that can be accurately diagnosed, the causes of which are understood, and which can be treated accordingly with rules-based therapies that are predicatively effective” (p. 44). It takes years of research, trial and error to get to this point, but it is a destination worth reaching. Precision medicine offers numerous advantages and these benefits can be found across healthcare organizations. It's hard to dispute that saving time, money, and lives isn't a very good thing.
