Communication is an aspect of everyday life. People communicate both verbally and, importantly, non-verbally. Verbal communication involves words while nonverbal communication consists of everything except words. Furthermore, there are several non-verbal concepts. These include tactile sensation, referring to touch; proxemics, which involves space and kinesics, which refers to gestures. Nonverbal communication is considered more meaningful and powerful because it communicates what the mouth does not communicate. Nonverbal communication is expressed through body language and paralanguage. Paralanguage involves the voice and body language is incorporated into non-verbal concepts. Overall, nonverbal communication is an important universal language. Paralanguage refers to nonverbal voice signals. This aspect of nonverbal communication includes intonation, speech sounds, and tone. People pay close attention to the voice as well as listening to the words spoken to clarify the message conveyed. Let's take the case of a listener who detects whether the speaker has expressed his message in the form of a question or statement through the tone of his voice (Besson, Graf, Hartung, Kropfhausser & Voisard 2005). Another example concerns the use of tone. The tone of voices can be friendly, aggressive, enthusiastic, nervous and monotonous. The situation contributes to the use of tone of voice. In the case of a political debate the tone would be exciting, while in a television news program it would have a more concrete tone. Additionally, people make vocal sounds to show interest or express feelings. These sounds include laughter and screams of joy, fear, and pain.
