Topic > Compare and Contrast Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

The film depicts the Dursleys and Harry leaving Privet Drive and heading straight for the ocean house. The film shows Hagrid picking him up and taking him to buy school supplies and here the novel and the film are the same. However, they begin to go in different directions when Harry is shown staying in the Leaky Cauldron and then heading towards the train. In the novel, Harry returns to the Dursleys' home where he stays for a month until September 1st and Uncle Vernon reluctantly takes him to the train station. In the climax of the story, Harry makes his way through all obstacles including a chess game and a vine pit to reach the Mirror of Erised that hides the sorcerer's stone. The mirror shows what a person wants most in life and also holds the philosopher's stone. Harry Potter in the novel sees all of his extended family surrounding him alive and in the film he only sees his mother and father. Professor Qurril has Lord Voldemort on his head and covers him by wearing a turban around his head. Harry starts looking for this mirror and tries to get to it before Professor Qurril does. Harry arrives at the mirror after Qurril and this is where the novel and the film take different paths. In the novel, Qurril envelops Harry in ropes with a spell, but in the film she lights flames around Harry. Qurril goes to touch Harry and in the novel he is burned intensely and dies. In the film, Qurril touches Harry and he immediately dies by turning to stone. Harry then faints and Dumbledore, headmaster of Hogwarts, tells Harry that only a person with a pure heart could seek and find the stone. This is why he was able to find him and not Qurril. The movie and the book are similar in this
