English is a universal language and is very important. Every person needs to learn the English language. Especially for university students who will enter society after graduation, English is perceived as essential for workplace communication in employment matters. But in Malaysia, English language proficiency among young people is declining. Since the 1970s, many stakeholders, from employers, to linguists, to educators to parents, have expressed their concern. (Azizan Haraiti, &Lee, YM, 2011) Low levels of English proficiency means young people are missing out on current and important issues. Mahathir Mohamad (2011) hopes that young Malaysians will learn to master the English language if they do not want to be left behind. Therefore, the need for young people to halt this decline has never been more urgent. Young people can improve their English language by setting a goal, motivation and attitude, they can attend some English courses or lessons and even the mass media can help young people improve their English language. The English language as a global language and the most used language in the world. As of 2014, there were more than 50 sovereign states and fewer than 30 non-sovereign entities where English was an official language. The number of users of English as a second or foreign language is increasing dramatically, estimated at 300 and 100 million people respectively (Crystal, D. 1985). So, English is an important language to improve it. There are some reasons to improve the English language. One reason is to gain access to knowledge by improving English. English is the language of science, technology, the Internet, business, popular entertainment and sports. Most of the research and studies are published in English, especially… in the middle of the paper… watch movies in English, especially song lyrics. Listening to English songs and reading the lyrics along with the song is not only a great way to improve your English but also to have fun. You can easily memorize the lyrics with the rhythm of the song and practice pronouncing the word. Simply put, knowledge of English is vital in today's world. Young Malaysians must master the English language if they do not want to be left behind. Objective, motivation and attitude are the key components to improve the English language. Furthermore, some English courses and the mass media can also help young people improve their English language. With these effective ways, young people can improve their English language just around the corner. Perhaps in the future, Malaysians will be able to speak English fluently with each other and be more educated in every aspect.
