Zhang Huan's performance, Seeds of Hamburg, was performed in 2002 in Hamburg, Germany. In the show, Huan entered the chicken's wooden wire cage after being covered in honey and birdseed. Inside the cage, Huan moved with various movements, and 28 birds were released into the cage. Then Huan proceeds to sit on this throne-like structure built out of crates. After sitting on the throne structure for a while and allowing the birds to munch on birdseed on his body, one bird finally tore a red ribbon from his mouth. The show ended with Huan releasing the bird. This symbolic performance represents hope and the courage to challenge authority. First, the geometric shape of the cage contrasts with each other. By allowing the birds to nibble on his body, Huan illustrated his desire to be “revealed” again----to become human again. The honey/birdseed mask hides his identity and could also be a symbol of sins and lies that people accumulate over time. The birds are his way of breaking free and becoming free. When Huan sat on the throne structure, he became the authority of the little “universe” in which he found himself. Huan didn't finish his performance until a bird pulled the red ribbon in his mouth. This is the most important part of the performance. The red ribbon, which stands out against the neutral colored background, represents the lineage of hope and love. Of all 28 birds, only one dared to pick it up. This bird symbolizes the courage to challenge a higher authority despite fear. Thanks to the courage and actions of this bird, he was awarded freedom. Huan argues that citizens of a society sometimes live in fear of acting against their own authority. It is necessary, if not crucial at times, to be blunt despite the fact that it may be referring to a time when most of Germany was blinded by the words of Adolf Hitler during World War II. Hitler fed the Germans lies that cause some to be totally blinded and lose their humanity. History shows us that there are serious consequences when people are silent and submissive. Another aspect is the background music. The music, which fuses Asian and Western classical traditions, signifies the unison of the two hemispheres of the world. Everyone, regardless of culture and ethnicity, is guilty of falling into the act of being herded and
