Topic > Themes and Symbolism in the Lottery by Shirley Jackson
The lottery is the symbol of luck. however, in the story luck is ironically the opposite. Usually, the lottery winner receives a prize and celebrates the lucky event, but it is terrifying for those who are “lucky” to get the winning ticket in the story. Every villager, including Mr. Summer and Mr. Grave who are the most powerful people in the village, must participate in the lottery where everyone will have the same chance of luck of being a victim. That's why the name of the ritual is a symbolism and also the irony of the whole story which shocks many readers because the ending is nothing like them.
