In the play A Midsummer Night's Dream, the plethora of comic styles used by Shakespeare illustrates his intention to make fun of love during the whole work. The work is known for its intricate and irrational plot, mainly due to the constantly changing love triangles. Once the powerful fairies become involved in the fate of the naive lovers – Demetrius, Helena, Lysander and Hermia – things get further complicated. The complication inflicted by the fairies is attributed to the powerful love potion that Oberon, king of the fairies, delivers to Puck, a mischievous fairy, to use on his wife Titania, intending to embarrass and distract her. This spiteful attitude is due to the argument between Oberon and Titania over the custody of an Indian boy. This topic is what ends up affecting everyone and driving everything crazy. This conniving plan, intended to serve as a diversion, ends up influencing not only Titania, but rather all three of the play's distinctive groups: the lovers, the fairies, and the mechanics. This comic journey of confusing love relationships is not entirely composed of slapstick comedy, but also crucial lessons about love. The comic styles of both farce and irony appear frequently throughout the work, strengthening it comically and morally. A character's oblivion, shown with dramatic irony, represents how love is truly blind. The randomness of the farce represents how love is not really right and is very confusing, like the play itself. Farce and dramatic irony both serve as vehicles to exemplify the absurd, out-of-control, and illogical realities of love. The dramatic irony in A Midsummer Night's Dream embodies the elaborate plot that symbolizes the complexity of love, while d...... middle of paper ......generally dwells on how complicated the love and how love is blind. On the other hand, the extravagant and farcical scenes contribute to the moral that love is irrational and ridiculous. Throughout the play, it is evident that Shakespeare intends to create a crucial moral about love while entertaining the audience at the same time. The comic aspect of the work as a whole; however, it is clearly not only intended to entertain the audience, but also serves as a way to symbolize this larger message about love. This moral is clearly not intended, but rather makes a point and mocks love and also, in the bigger picture, society. Although some may interpret the moral differently than others, when reading or watching A Midsummer Night's Dream, it is crucial to not only understand the humor but also pick up on the morals about love and realize that humor can help the moral one..
