In the novel 1984, by George Orwell, the thematic element of control is clearly represented through a variety of perspectives such as newspeak, telescreens, thought crime, or in other words, psychological and physical manipulation. First, telescreens play a very important role in 1984. The party uses telescreens mainly to monitor all members. Microphones are also hidden throughout the city for an even better supervision atmosphere. The party controls the television screen by broadcasting propaganda about Oceania's military victories, economic production figures, the national anthem and two-minute hate films. “Big Brother is watching you” (3) is a slogan that is always shown or mentioned on television screens. This in itself is intimidating and dominating. It makes the Oceanians question their actions; therefore not having free will. Especially because the consequences of betraying Big Brother are extremely serious, as in room 101. The party has a say in what members are exposed to and "it was also conceivable that they would watch everyone all the time." (5) The inhabitants of Oceania were accustomed to the idea of living under a constant state of control brought about by advanced and invasive technology. Another aspect of control presented in 1984 is Newspeak, the "official" language of Oceania. Language is the main connection with human thought. Therefore, the party limits and shifts the vocabulary available for Oceanians to use; constantly perfecting it by making it more difficult to speak freely. The party introduced Newspeak to replace the English language. They had a goal in the hope that no one would form thoughts that would be seen as rebellious and/or question the power of the party. The party seeks an entirely narrow range of thought, so thoughtcrime would be... middle of paper...... at an early age, they were taught to thrive on catching people responsible for thoughtcrime. “'You're a traitor!' the boy shouted. 'You are a mental criminal!'” (25) The party was so infatuated with having power and authority, that it meant no possibility of escaping Big Brother life for Oceanians. To conclude, there are many elements of control and manipulation, which are exposed in 1984. The Party had a way of tailoring all perspectives of people's lives to its own advantage, making it impossible to betray Big Brother. The Party has set itself the goal of controlling the minds of every individual in Oceania. “You have to love Big Brother. It's not enough to obey him: you have to love him." (295) To ensure everyone was a Big Brother supporter they gave you one and only one option, which was to support Big Brother or be tortured to death..
