Othello“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves” as Victor Frankl once explained, that it is our environment that makes us who we are. And if we don't like who we have become, then we must change ourselves to change the environment in which we find ourselves. In Shakespeare's Othello, the order and disorder of the setting parallels the order and disorder of Iago's character. The story begins with Venice where the character of Iago parallels the “orderly [and] law-binding” environment of the city where society is peaceful. Iago's status reflects the current setting, since Iago has not yet caused any problems. He behaves with order, as when he did not get the promotion, Iago simply said “there is no remedy” (). This develops his character as a peaceful person, because he simply accepted Othello's decision and did not object or oppose it. Thus reflecting the setting, because just like the setting Iago behaves in an orderly and peaceful manner. Not only did Iago not react when he did not receive the promotion, but he also questioned "when I in any... term am kindred to love [the] Moor" (1.1.40). The fact that Iago questions himself shows that Iago is civilized, because he is not attacking Othello, or immediately hating Othello for not promoting him. Instead he is making a decision by thinking logically about whether or not he likes Othello. So like the orderly setting of Venice, Iago's character is the same because delving into the options you have before making a decision represents order as the decision will have a reason behind it. Furthermore, Iago not only reflected on his decisions while in the quiet city of Venice, but also provided security to Ro...... middle of paper ......arter outright violence when "[h]e stabs Rodrigo" (5.1.61). So Iago's character reflects the setting, as anger leads to violence because both anger and violence are directly related to each other. Also because it is precisely anger that makes us too passionate and leads us not to behave correctly, pushing us to commit violent acts. In short, the new chaotic and tense, creating parallels with the character of Iago. Since Iago, raises conflicts between people, kills Rodrigo which reflects a chaotic and tense environment. Overall, in the story Othello, as the setting changed from orderly, to unpleasant, to chaotic, Iago's character reflected the setting each time. As his character has also changed throughout the story, from being ordained in Venice to finally becoming violent in Cyprus. So the character of Iago parallels the setting.
