Animals in research have made many contributions that have led to treatments and cures of diseases affecting humans. Through the use of animals in experiments a better life has been achieved. "Sweet are the uses of adversity." This quote from Williams Shakespeare proves that all good comes with evil, just like using animals in research. Many oppose the use of animals for research arguing that it is not morally or ethically stable. The results of animal experiments have the potential to cure numerous media problems such as cancer or the common cold. However, there is controversy, especially ethical, surrounding the methods used. Animal experiments used in biological research have helped make many advances in human medicine. Through these experiments, a decrease in infant mortality, a greater life expectancy and an increase in the quality of life were achieved (American Medical Association 3). Through direct or indirect experimentation, almost all medical advances can be traced back to animal research. The control and eradication of diseases such as smallpox, polio and measles has been achieved with animals. Blood transfusions, burn therapy, brain and heart surgery were all performed the same way (American Medical Association 54). "Biomedical advances depend on animal research, and failure to use them would deprive humans and criminals of the benefits of research" (American Media Association74). Through animal research we may find solutions to AIDS, cancer, heart disease, aging and birth defects. As Lord Adrian stated, “The use of live animals in scientific research can be considered justified if it is likely to produce appreciable benefits to society, if there is no way of carrying out the research in question… half the paper. .....who use animals in their research. Since 1971, more than 500,000 Americans die from cancer each year. This is a 74% increase since Nixon originally signed the bill (Slezcpecki 7). Animal research has been a highly questionable topic. Animal research has helped us and will continue to discover things that would take much longer without the help of animals. Today, thanks to research conducted on animals, many cures and diseases have been discovered that were deadly years ago. As beautiful as it may seem, there is always a dark side to every good story. Some animals suffer unnatural suffering and physical harm. Unreasonable suffering is something that is not approved by society. This topic is one that may never come to a simmer. Knowing the ins and outs of this issue will help the reader decide for themselves whether animal research is immoral or worthwhile..
