The film is set in the late 1850s, when slavery was still accepted and a common part of the culture. Django Unchained begins with a scene of two men on horseback dragging a line of slaves chained together by their feet on a cold winter night. The two men on horseback meet a man who calls himself Dr. King Schultz and acts as if his current profession is dentistry, which can be seen from his cart being pulled by his horse. Dr. Schultz socializes with the two men and asks if they had a slave named Django, shortly after discovering that he was actually in the line of slaves trying to negotiate with the men and purchase Django. plagiarism. Get an Original Essay At the beginning of the film it can be seen that Dr. Schultz is a sharpshooter after killing the two men on horseback after threatening to take Dr. Schultz's life. Once the men were dead, Dr. Schultz declared Django a free man and they set off on horseback towards the nearest town. The next morning, they arrived in the nearest town and the two spoke when Dr. Schultz revealed that he no longer practices dentistry and is now signed up to the life of a bounty hunter, one who takes wanted criminals alive or dead. The reason Dr. Schultz freed Django is because he is looking for a band of brothers who have a price on their heads and comes across information that Django may, in fact, know where they are and what they look like. first visit to a local plantation, they soon discover that the three brothers are on the plantation and so it's up to the bounty hunters to do their job. Once the job is done, Dr. Schultz realizes that Django could be useful to him when it comes to collecting bounties. He also realizes that Django has a real talent at being a sharpshooter, just like him. Later that night the two talk and Django reveals that he is married to a woman named Broomhilda and explains that they were separated after trying to escape their life of slavery one night. Touched by his story, Dr. Schultz tells Django that he can accompany him as a bounty hunter during the winter and once he has raised some money and gets closer to summer, they will go in search of his wife. After a long period of time spent fulfilling bounties, the two raise a large sum of money and embark on the promised journey to find Django's wife and free her. The two conduct some research and conclude that Broomhilda can be found on one of the larger plantations that go by the name of Candieland. Calvin Candie is the owner of the plantation and inherited the property from his father. Dr. Schultz and Django visit Candieland and tell Calvin that they are interested in a slave they could use to fight, but they are actually looking for Broomhilda and hope to free her. The two realize very quickly that Broomhilda is indeed home. Candieland and once they find some private time, they discuss plans to release her. After spending some time together, tensions rise but the two choose a slave to fight and tell Calvin they will return in seven days to retrieve the slave. This is when things go wrong, Stephen, the Candieland waitress, realizes that the three know each other and captures them all. They then force Doctor Schultz to pay a high price for Broomhilda instead of the fighting slave on whomthey would have saved anyway. Once, the documents were signed sealing the deal, a firefight breaks out between Django and the plantation after Dr. Schultz kills Calvin, ending in Dr. Schultz's death as well. After a few minutes of gunfire Django is captured and is supposed to be sent to a mining company where he will spend the rest of his days in slave mining. Yet Django escapes and kills the men who were transporting him to the mining facility and steal some dynamite in the process. Django returns to Candieland and peppers the place with dynamite while everyone on the plantation attends Calvin's funeral. Another firefight breaks out and Django kills everyone inside and then blows up the house with stolen dynamite. Ultimately, once Candieland was no more, Django and Broomhilda moonlight away to begin their new lives as free individuals. Sociological Terms The first sociological term present in the film Django Unchained and the most obvious is racism and can be found in chapter 11. of the text. Racism is the belief that not all races are equal and that there are races that reign supreme over others. In the 1800s, the belief that some races were unequal arose. You can see this in numerous scenes in the film where Django is questioned about his status because he is a free man. The people in the film thought this was impossible because they despised Django for his race and thought he couldn't have the same social status as them. The second sociological term featured in the film Django Unchained is chattel slavery. and is found in chapter 10 of the text. Chattel slavery is the term used whenever you own another person as if they were a piece of property. Throughout the film you can see slavery taking place. Some examples of this would be slaves working in the fields to harvest crops and then selling them for cash, forcing others to fight each other for simple entertainment, following orders requested in the Candieland house, etc. The film revolves around slavery and acts as the biggest conflict in the film that Django and Dr. Schultz must overcome. The third sociological term present in the film Django Unchained is discrimination and can be found in chapter 11 of the text. Discrimination is a subjective way of thinking because of what others may have said or what you may believe based on past experiences (Griffiths et al., 2019). You can discriminate color, age, sex, health, etc. There are several occasions when individuals discriminate against others, some examples are when Calvin discusses the value of his slaves based on their age and health, assumptions about one's wealth and status based on the information they know such as speaking a foreign language, making slaves walk in shackles and chains while others ride horses or carriages, etc. The fourth sociological term present in the film Django Unchained is another significant one and can be found in chapter 1 of the text. A significant other is someone who is important to someone and has a positive impact on their life. Near the beginning of the film, Django's motivation to help Dr. Schultz is because there is a flame of hope in finding his significant other, Broomhilda. Once, Django lays eyes on Broomhilda and is overcome with anger after seeing the torment she is going through in Candieland. Django keeps his anger bottled up until things go south and a firefight breaks out. Django was willing to surrender during the firefight because he realized that Broomhilda was in danger. Even after being captured and sent to a local mining company, Django never stopped trying to save his significant other and was willing to sacrifice his.
