In the buccal cavity the lizard has well-developed teeth, the amount of teeth in the lizard depends on the species of lizard. For example, the green iguana has 19 to 29 on its lower jaw and 20 to 30 on its upper jaw (Jacobson, 2003). The most common type of tooth in lizards is the pleurodon dentition, which is very loose because it is not set in the sockets. Some lizards also lose their teeth and replace them throughout their lives (Fraser and Girling, 2011). Most insectivorous lizards do not chew their food, they ingest it whole, whereas herbivorous lizards tear and chew vegetation before ingesting it (Grenard, 1998).
