Troy denies Cory the opportunity to go to college to play football, leaving Cory feeling like Troy's prisoner. Metzger states that, “The fence Troy completed, however, will fail to keep Cory [at home]” (2). Cory tightens the fence between him and his father even more after they get into a physical altercation. After the argument, Troy tells Cory, “It's okay. This is the second shot. Stay away from me, boy. Don't cancel. You are living with a full count. Do not erase” (Wilson 2.2). This clearly shows the barrier and tension that is created between father and son. Ultimately, the barriers that Troy and Cory build between each other lead Cory to leave home and join the Marines (Metzger 2-3). The fence built between Cory and his father prevents them from having a loving father-son relationship
