Ralph Waldo Emerson (1883) said, “Every man has his calling, his talent is his calling. There is a direction in which all space is open to him.” (page 112). He was referring to the gifts that God has given us to realize the plan that He has for our lives. Discovering and using these gifts is part of the decision-making process in career counseling. Christians advocate the use of spiritual discernment to guide decision making. Correctly interpreting God's will for one's life is at the center of each of our choices, including those choices that concern vocation. Personal Position Horton (2009) provides an inventory for evaluating one's personal spiritual discernment approach. In making this assessment, I found that I answered all of the statements with “very important.” In fact, each statement played an important role in my decision-making process regarding my current career goals, as well as other aspects of my life. Therefore, I have found it more fruitful to prioritize statements. When completed, the results showed that my top three were: Consistency with the character/ethics of Jesus, praying for wisdom to make godly decisions, and counseling with wise counsel. Given the way I completed the survey and the responses I received, I initially placed myself in the “Bull's Eye” approach (p. 8). My problems with this approach, however, led me to modify my assessment and move toward the “relationship formation approach” (p. 11). Horton (2009) reports that the target approach assumes that God's will is for each of us to fulfill a predetermined destiny. It is stated that God prevents Christians from straying too far from the plan and that the goal is for each person to find the “right” decisions… middle of paper… with God including constant prayer, seeking wise counsel, studying the Scriptures and seeking God's divine intervention will reveal his destination.
