Talore RobertsOrmond-5English Honors21 February 2014Dog FightingDog fighting is a bloody sport in which two dogs are placed together in a pit and are forced to tear each other to death for " entertainment" and monetary gain for spectators-players. While many experts and their research point in other directions, solutions to dog fighting are ensuring that people know what to expect from certain breeds, how to properly train and care for these dogs, and ensuring that the community knows how to identify and report a dog. fight or report a suspicious environment similar to the dog fighting environment. The reason many dog attacks are reported is because many people do not know how to identify or react in the presence of certain dogs. A large number of people are unable to accurately identify a pit bull from a bulldog or Staffordshire terrier. By definition, a Pit Bull is a medium-sized, solidly built, short-haired dog whose early ancestors came from England and Ireland. Some of the most popular fighting breeds are Pitbull, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Bulldog, and American Bull Terrier. Butchers used large dogs, similar to mastiffs, called Bullenbeisser. These dogs were trained to latch onto the bull's nose and not let go until the bull was down (Bastian). This is why people choose dogs similar to this breed for fighting, because they will not let go until the object they are going against has been knocked down. A common misconception about Pitbulls is that they have locking jaws. In a Pit Bull's skull, the majority is made up of jaw bones and muscles. With so much power behind their skin, Pit Bulls have a lot of strength to resist. These dogs do not have a lock... in the center of the card... and can also be tied up (Donaldson). These dogs are smaller and weaker, so they cannot fight back. Bait dogs are obtained from dogs that lose fights, stolen from other yards, from advertisements, shelters or kennels "free for a good home". One article reports: This 100-pound Pit Bull was seen being thrown from a moving vehicle. It was wrapped in a bag from the Red Food store. His ears were cut off, his legs were sawed off along with his nose and tail. The woman who found him states, “Yet, in this dog's final moment, feeling pain beyond our imagination, with only as much forgiveness as a dog can hold in his heart, he wanted to be loved” (Donaldson). This statement shows that these dogs, despite not having received affection or adequate care previously, still have the capacity to be kind and loving, although they experience pain beyond the physical threshold.
