There has been a heated debate on the issue of forced medication, especially in psychiatric hospitals. Clients with mental illnesses often complain about the practice of forced therapy because they believe the effects of forced therapy outweigh the benefits of psychotropic medications. In contrast, mental health clinicians say that forced medication is necessary because without the drugs, patients can become violent and dangerous. Because of these conflicting opinions, people wonder who should have the right to decide whether a client should take medications. However, there are three lines of defense for people suffering from mental illness for involuntary treatment. These are: Social interests Patients may receive compulsory treatment but not coercive treatment, but still others receive coercive treatment as part of voluntary treatment. Another study was conducted to describe patients' experiences and nurses' perceptions of patients' experiences with forced therapy before, during, and after forced therapy (Haglund et al., 2003). The study also described patients' and nurses' perceptions of alternatives to forced therapy. The number of people interviewed was 11, both patients and nurses. The findings demonstrated that forced therapy evoked a range of patient experiences reported by both patients and nurses. These experiences were illness, being forcibly medicated, and drugs. Most patients in this study mentioned a number of alternatives, but the nurses did not mention any. A very small number of patients, not as many as the nurses thought, were in favor of forced therapy. The study concluded that patients and nurses do not share the same perceptions of what patients experience during the application of forced therapy (Haglund et al..,
