Topic > The Question of God: C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud...

In 2002, Dr. Armand Nicholi, Jr. sought to bring together two of the greatest minds of the 20th century to discuss the answer to the enduring question throughout life: "Is there a God and, if so, how should we respond to his existence? Nicholi is the first scholar to have ever placed the arguments of CS Lewis and Sigmund Freud side by side in an attempt to recreate a debate as realistic as possible between the two men. He examines their writings, letters and lectures in an attempt to accurately represent both men in this debate. His result, the nearly 300-page book, The Question of God: C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud Debate God, Love. , Sex, and the Meaning of Life, is one of the most comprehensive, well-researched, and impartial summaries of the debate between “believer and non-believer” worldviews (p. 5). The existence of God and our response must be asked. Although each man had drastically different worldviews and responses, each man sought to learn and understand the other's worldview. Nicholi points out that Lewis may have had an advantage in understanding the worldview of non-believers because up until the age of 30 he claimed to be “even more certain of his atheism than Freud was” (2002, p. 81). . In his adult life, Freud had no dramatic change in his worldview from believer to nonbeliever as Lewis did. This fact may give Lewis a slight advantage in understanding the non-believer's worldview; However, Freud was still one of the greatest minds of his time and his work demonstrates a strong (if negative) understanding of the believer's worldview. The question of God is divided into two parts. Part one, titled: “What Should We Believe,” seeks to answer the first half of the question… half of the paper… and to see the world through a lens of hope, not fatalism. Psychoanalysis teaches that who you are is set in stone. There may be ways to deal with the depression you face, the anger you struggle with, and the difficulty relating to others you struggle with; but ultimately, these flaws are part of you, you can't remove them. Psychoanalysis teaches that while you were young, while you were weak, while you were impressionable, these defects were formed, they took root, they became fixed in you. Christianity has a message, a message of hope, a hope formed by the fact that, as Paul joyfully proclaims in the Letter to the Romans: "while we were still weak... God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ is died for us.” Works Cited Nicholi, A. M. (2002).
