According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “25.8 million people, or 8.3% of the U.S. population, have diabetes.” Many Americans in the United States suffer from what is called uncontrolled diabetes, which is when you don't take care of yourself with diabetes. This can cause many different complications, including eye, stroke, kidney, foot, HHSN, and ketoacidosis. These are very serious and sometimes fatal. With daily exercise, healthy eating, and of course, maintaining diabetes you will live a healthy future. For starters, what is diabetes and how do you get diabetes? Diabetes is when the pancreas is unable to produce insulin, when this happens blood sugar fluctuates. There are two types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. The American Diabetes Association states that: “In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert sugar, starches and other foods into energy needed for daily life. With the help of insulin therapy and other treatments, even young children can learn to manage their condition and live long, healthy lives.” Then the other type of diabetes is type 2. Type 2 diabetes is one in which the body and pancreas do not produce or use insulin properly. At first the pancreas produces a large amount of insulin, then it cannot keep up with the amount of insulin produced, and finally it cannot produce enough to the point where glucose levels are at an adequate amount. Type 1 diabetes is inherited from your own ancestors and is unpreventable. Type 2 diabetes is caused by poor nutrition and obesity. Type 2 diabetes is easily preventable by following a healthy diet and exercising regularly.
