At some point every little girl dreams of becoming a model, she wants to be thin and beautiful like the girls they see in magazines. Often these girls start to want to look like that more and more, so much so that it becomes an obsession, they think that looking like those models is a must. Once girls reach adolescence, they begin to make drastic changes to achieve that look they have always dreamed of having. These teenagers' obsessions with how they look or how much they weigh have led to an increase in the number of people contracting an eating disorder in an attempt to achieve that "ideal" look. To fully understand what these people are dealing with, it's important to take a look at what an eating disorder is, what different types of eating disorders exist, and what can be done to treat an eating disorder. An eating disorder is defined as illnesses related to irregular eating habits and severe discomfort or concern about weight or body shape. It is often characterized by inadequate or excessive dietary intake, which can also lead to permanent damage to health and well-being. Eating disorders can occur in both males and females, generally starting during adolescence, but can occur at any stage of life. There are three different types of eating disorders that are typically the most common and most talked about eating disorders and they are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder (Ekern). All these eating disorders normally coexist with another type of psychological condition. such as any type of anxiety disorder, substance abuse and depression. Although the specific cause is still unknown, many psychologists hypothesize that the combination of biological, psychological... in the middle of the card... is specific to the treatment of eating disorders, there are medications that help with this. The medications that a doctor will prescribe for someone with an eating disorder are antidepressants, antipsychotics, and mood stabilizers. These three drugs are all approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (the National Institute of Mental Health). Even though those girls have always dreamed of becoming models, they put themselves in danger while trying to achieve that look. These teenagers' obsessions with how they look or how much they weigh have led to an increase in the number of people contracting an eating disorder in an attempt to achieve that "ideal" look. Most of the time, when these girls get to look like what they tried to look like, they will still see themselves as overweight, causing their eating disorder to further worsen.
