They show how gender roles influence our childhood development (Iervolino, Knafo, & Plomin, 2005), how our willingness to conform to gender roles influences the our work (Judge & Livingston 2008) and how they influence the ways we help each other (Eagly 2009). They may also impact our mental health (Gregory, Wampold, and Zamarripa 2003). It seems that the only aspect of our lives that they do not influence is our tendency toward certain types of prejudice (Stefurak, Taylor, and Mehta 2010). The question of whether they are harmful to our society still remains open. These gender roles manipulate the population to conform to them and have shaped our society into what it is. Gender roles are learned during childhood, and development contrary to them is labeled atypical development (Iervolino, Knafo, & Plomin, 2005). These ideals of masculinity versus femininity affect our mental health, making the way men show affection very refined and restricted (Gregory, Wampold, and Zamarripa 2003). Over the course of a lifetime, our willingness to conform to these ideals affects our income, as men who conform will earn more and women who conform will earn less (Judge & Livingston 2008). The inherent problem with conformity is that it denies individuals freedom of expression; their desires are to be themselves.
