Page No. Print (pg. 28) (10-30-13)) The Boston Tea Party took place on December 16, 1773 as a protest by American colonists against the British government. Both the English and the colonists loved tea and it brought a significant amount of money to the East India Trading Company. Due to the heavy debt incurred from the French and Indian War, the British government imposed new taxes on the colonies. As a result, Britain passed the Tea Act. They did not want British businesses to be harmed by the new tax, so Parliament declared British businesses exempt from the Tea Act. The Tea Act would force American colonists to purchase tea from the Tea Act. East Indies stating that “it was the cheapest around”.
