INTRODUCTIONScheduling and scheduling of highway construction is a complex process. For anyone involved in a highway construction project, in-depth knowledge of construction methods, materials, equipment and historical production rates is a very important factor. My personal knowledge and experience have helped me in planning several highway construction projects. I realized that good project planning takes into account the economies that can be achieved by doing multiple tasks at the same time. Planning a highway project must take into account the impact of climate, labor relations, qualifications and productivity of subcontractors, availability of materials and a number of other factors. Critical to the success of any major highway construction and reconstruction project is the ability to accurately plan, predict and control the construction process. Budget control, resource allocation and subsequent impacts are some of the important factors that a planner must keep in mind while planning a highway construction project. Today, highway builders need sophisticated project management tools to achieve their project goals on time. Project planning has helped developers tremendously in constructing buildings over the last 20-30 years. However, traditional planning techniques used by construction contractors cannot be applied to highway construction because the activities involved in building a highway are fundamentally different from those typically found in a construction project. My personal experience in tackling several highway projects in the past has revealed that typical highway construction/rehabilitation projects should be linear activities.
