Money. Our economy, our nation, our life thrives on this lifeless, tangible paper. It is clear that in the eyes of an advertiser, money is essential. After all, the point of advertising a product is to sell it, ultimately bringing in a lot of money to companies and their advertisers. On the surface, this may seem reasonable, but in reality advertising is harmful to society, its health and well-being. Since it is their job, advertisers do an impeccable job in targeting and convincing the company to buy products. Although silly advertisements broadcast on TV may seem ineffective, it is proven that "a person who is not aware of the claims of advertising against him is precisely the most vulnerable to the attack of advertising" (Schrank). Through what may seem like unnecessary advertisements, companies successfully dictate and control society into purchasing their product without the consumer even realizing it! This is harmful to the individual exposed to advertising, as he loses control of his life in the economic and consumerist world. It's almost as if advertising hypnotizes society. As described in Source D, once a company has won over consumers (particularly teenage consumers), they or “she could be yours for life.” (Day). This presents the problem of advertising imposing harmful effects on one's well-being. Control of one's life is now in the hands of an advertiser and society's perceptions, so the helpless teenager can only follow and slowly degrade their sense of self without even realizing its effect. A portion of the population might argue, probably money-hungry advertisers in particular, that advertising is a useful tool for educating the public about important products needed in everyday life. However, Sesana uses a humorous approach to identify advertising as unnecessary when he states that vital products are not even advertised! “No one spends large amounts of money advertising flour. People will buy it even without it being advertised." (Source F). Not only is advertising harmful, it's not even necessary! Society can live without flashy cars and cigarettes, so why target the population so diligently if such products aren't even necessary to live a prosperous life? Since advertising renders useless, it wastes society's time and energy that could be better spent improving the world rather than benefiting a ravenous company. An important issue that the act of advertising instigates is the possible vulnerability of one's health. Companies choose to advertise products that are dangerous to your health, blinded by the income they want to earn. According to Source B, cigarettes, although dangerous to your health, continue to thrive on the market.
