Topic > Refugee and the concept of refugee - 1355

Due to recent events, particularly the multitude of attacks in France and Germany in current media, the concept of refugee has been intertwined and associated with notions of terrorism and violence. Refugee status is vital so that those displaced by conflict can be accepted by the global community. The idea behind being a refugee is that you should be able to find a new safe place to live. The stigmatization of refugees and the association with terrorist attacks, violence and disharmony is causing a vast dichotomy between what it truly means to be a refugee and those terrorists who exploit refugee status to advance themselves or group interests. The problems with the media go hand in hand with the current problems with refugees. While anthropologists seek to understand why and how people are affected by conflict and then become refugees, the media largely tends to downplay this aspect, thus undermining the validity of refugee claims. It is also the interchangeability used in the media between the terms migrant and refugee that limits the way in which the concept of refugee is used. The difference is however important since refugees are protected by international and national laws while migrants are not afforded the same protections and are subject to immigration policy and nations are under no obligation to take adequate measures.
