Topic > The Titanic Disaster: The Third Cause of the Bitanic...

The size of the Titanic caused some flaws in the design. No shipbuilder had ever attempted to build a ship of this size before. The rudders met the requirements, but the design was obsolete. The designers did not think to design them to allow the Titanic to maneuver better. Standard at the time was a triple-screw engine configuration, however this prevented the Titanic from turning in reverse. This was due to the larger size of the vessel. The ship's bow was stronger and could have withstood a head-on collision. The Titanic was equipped with three engines, each weighing 720 tons. They were heated by burning coal. There were not enough lifeboats on the ship. There were only enough lifeboats to carry half of those people aboard. The lifeboats they had available had not been loaded to their maximum capacity. The lifeboats were capable of carrying sixty-five people. Unfortunately, there were only twenty-eight to thirty people on each boat. Many more lives could have been saved if the rich had been willing to share a lifeboat with the rich
