Topic > Kinesiology Tape Case Study - 2070

In 1973, Dr. Kenso Kase created kinesiology tape (KT-Tape) to reduce physiological effects such as pain, joint misalignment, and to further support the range of motion of muscles ( Kase et al., 1998). The physical and alternative therapy fields have since used it to supplement their patients' exercise programs. This form of treatment has shown promise for sports injuries and musculoskeletal disorders, but also as a treatment for the side effects of cancer (Smykla, 2013). Additionally, the tape's popularity comes from the fact that it can be worn for one to four days before reapplication is necessary. This is in comparison to compression bandages which need to be reapplied once, or even more than once, per day (Kase et al., 2003). This statement is supported by numerous scientific articles relating to various studies conducted with kinesiology tape. Muscle fatigue is caused by activities and exercises that tire the muscle and reduce its ability to produce force. When muscle fatigue occurs, the body's stability decreases, particularly around the joints and ligaments attached to the muscles. When stability weakens, the risk of injury increases because muscles stop contracting and supporting joints and ligaments as they should. This can lead to severe joint pain and torn ligaments. By using kinesiology tape, injuries such as these can be prevented by providing additional support and limiting the strain placed on joints and ligaments once the muscle has transformed (2014).
