Topic > Women's Struggles from Two Different Points of View

“Hills Like White Elephants” was written by Ernest Hemingway and first published in August 1927. The other work I chose to compare with the short story is “Black Woman" written by Georgia Douglas Johnson and first published in 1922 during the Harlem Renaissance. The short story "Hills Like White Elephants" is about a woman pregnant out of wedlock. The man in the story is trying to make her undergo surgery to remove the baby, such as an abortion. But the woman is debating whether to keep the baby and make the relationship with the baby work in their life. She thinks that maybe having a baby will make their relationship stronger. The poem “Black Woman” depicts a black woman talking to her unborn child inside her and begging the child not to be born into this world again. She is that the world is a terrible place for her to raise the child . The mother's fears are that the child will be treated very horribly and will have to live the life of a black person. She even goes into the poem stating that she will take the life of herself and her baby, so that she doesn't have to raise the baby in those conditions. Both of these works are similar and yet so different in terms of literature. Both face the woman's difficulties when expecting a child when there is an unstable future. However, I believe Johnson's work accurately portrays the woman's struggles with Hemingway. The first argument that can be raised is that the point of view in Johnson's poem shows struggle, pain, and fear more than the woman depicted in the short story. by Hemingway. This is also a valid point because the woman in the poem is black; it only adds to the pain he feels towards… the middle of the paper… An example is: “and we could have all this,” he said. And we could have it all and every day we make it more and more impossible. What did you say? I said we could have it all. We can have it all. No, we can't. We can have the whole world. No, we can't. We can go anywhere. No, we can't. It's no longer ours. It's ours. No, it's not. And once they take it away from you, you'll never get it back. But they didn't take it away from him. We will wait and see." (Hemingway). The impact on the reader will be that for him the couple has problems but they can overcome them together. Furthermore, if they are willing to work together, it shows that there is hope that the woman and the child are together and grow as a family. It shows that the man is selfish in the relationship and they need to work together to overcome the huge obstacle they are facing in their relationship..
