“When used sensitively, respecting the gravity of the situation, humor can build the connection between caregiver, patient and family” ( Penson et al. 2005) . Additionally, you should consider cultural sensitivities and avoid targeted comments directed directly at a patient or family member. Inappropriate humor can make an already stressful situation exponentially worse and increasingly uncomfortable. Humor between patient and caregiver helps create a bond, instills trust, and injects a little fun into the environment. Allowing a patient to see us as human beings and not emotionless robots gives us an even better opportunity to help them achieve their health-improving goals. A patient who trusts a nurse will more easily give up information about how he or she is feeling. It may get them to think about how they feel so we can provide more in-depth information, thus making our jobs a little easier when discussing things with doctors and other nurses. It also gives us the opportunity to make more thorough and appropriate nursing diagnoses that will better help the patient achieve their healthcare
