Sentences are constructed simply to translate thoughts into words. The nature of the way a writer composes his sentences is dictated by the rhetorical situation of the text. The purpose of this essay is to examine the totality of rhetorical situations on two sentences from separate texts to critically analyze how the author used the techniques to connect with his audience, as well as analyze the cultural context of the authors of two sentences separate. I have chosen two sentences from a collection of academically controversial letters exchanged between Friedrich von Hayek and John Maynard Keynes, which focus on the contestability of economic policy. Both sentences are part of the closing arguments and this subsequently sheds light on the stylistic differences of both authors. Phrase ONE “They will be “martyrs by mistake” and, in their martyrdom, they will hurt others as well as themselves.” - Keynes 1932Sentence TWO'If the government wishes to aid the recovery, the right way to proceed is not to spend, but to abolish those restrictions on trade and the free movement of capital (including restrictions on new issues) which currently prevent even the beginning of recovery.'- Hayek 1932The topic of the debate between Keynes and Hayek is based on the effectiveness of capital investments and the policies that the government should adopt. I find it appropriate to discern the credibility of the authors, which is imperative to examine the situational influence of their words. Both gentlemen, at the time, were considered eminent economic theorists. At the time both Hayek and Keynes held senior positions in major economic institutions and, thanks to their economic prowess, both were the most cited economists in... half the paper...; Hayek also provides an outline for how to play the role. My planning for this assignment was slightly stressful. Stress was induced when trying to choose which sentences to use. I had a hard time choosing a phrase that appealed to me culturally. In the end I selected sentences from economic theorists. The topic of the lyrics was based on the causes of the Great Depression and the best approach to move forward was discussed. Keynesian economics and neoclassical economics voted for orthodoxy throughout the twentieth century. In recent decades the two schools of thought, in many places, create a synthesis, from which the economic policies that are applied to the Australian economy derive. The economy is an integral part of our daily lives, so I find it logical to analyze the sentences of two people who have irrevocably shaped the world to what it is now.
