Heaven is a Playground is a book, published in 1974 by author Rick Telander, about Telander's trip to New York City and the summer he spent there for a piece on a magazine, acclimating himself with the culture that existed on inner-city basketball courts in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. While there, he met a man named Rodney Parker. Parker was something of a street agent because he worked tirelessly to send many of these inner-city kids to school. In the book, Telander talks about all his experiences with the people in the neighborhood and the relationships he developed with the kids, who he would later coach. I chose this particular book because I am a huge basketball fan and have always been intrigued by street basketball. I was also very interested in this book because I lived in the city center for short periods of time, so I could somewhat understand some of the things that happened in the book. This book also offers in-depth insight into the relationship between sport and society and how the two are closely related. Heaven is a Playground is obviously a primary source because it is a first-hand, eyewitness account. Rick Telander wrote the book about his experiences and what he saw during his time in Brooklyn. Since this is a book written by Telander himself, it would be considered a written document. The book is a detailed diary of events that occurred during this time period. While this is a primary source, there will obviously also be some bias because Telander tells the story from his point of view. The way he writes makes you want to believe what he is telling you is true, but there were other people involved and they don't get put... middle of paper... great read. It's easy to see why Sports Illustrated included it in its roundup of the 100 best sports books of all time. References CATEGORICAL IMPERATIVE. (n.d.).
