He is taken to the hospital to treat his malnutrition, wounds and illnesses. After weeks of constant treatment, doctors cleared Wiesel and he was able to look at himself in the mirror for the first time in a few years. As he looks at himself in disbelief, he says, “From deep within the mirror, a corpse was gazing at me.” (115). Once again, the author was able to incorporate a metaphor describing the condition of his body as it did not strictly resemble a corpse. This metaphor also symbolizes the mental, physical, and spiritual “death” that Elie went through throughout the story. The reader is not told whether Wiesel has regained his faith in God, but is led to believe that he has survived thanks to his relentless love for his children.
