At first, what came almost immediately was his desire to thank his parents. However, saying both his parents wasn't enough. Men in the working-class community are the ones who bring home the paycheck and support the family. Consequently, it was necessary to identify the male in the family, even if in Patri's eyes it is not worth the toast. Patri, however, lies and claims to be "The Best Man in the World". Patri's toast denotes a turning point in Patri's thought process. She realizes that she needs to be valued as a person and not remain “at the bottom of the ladder” in the most “primitive” form (pages 131 and 132). After the toasts, Patri learns of the unique opportunity to join the ghosts who “haunt” and reside in the building where Patri's family and friends work. Not only is it unique in that Patri is the only one invited, but also in this situation she is a woman with the power to say yes or no. “The ghosts put her in the position of having to think, of busying herself with thinking” (p. 108). Unlike other women, Patri can decide whether to jump off the ledge and join a new group of people who seem to appreciate her presence, or remain on the bottom rung of a large society for which she is a social outcast. On the last page of the story, Patri decides that the time has come to take the leap and join the ghost society. In the end Patri was essentially rejected
