Topic > Discourse Analysis on Deviant Burial - 2433

I will collect various types of archaeological publications dealing with deviant burial. It is important to include different types of publications to see if this affects how deviance is addressed. I will next determine whether common patterns are evident in the study of deviant burials. If common patterns are detected, each will be explored individually. By searching for specific statements within the texts, I will attempt to determine how the patterns relate to the interpretation of deviant burial. Since I have not previously dealt with deviant burials, I will also briefly convey my interpretations – as a simulated reader – of the way deviance is conveyed through the material. This will provide a distinctive perspective on how the publications' intended audience will view the evidence presented by archaeologists. A discourse analysis is never complete as there are too many aspects to fully analyze a topic (Dijk 2001; Phillips and Hardy 2002). However, it is my intent to attempt to examine deviant burial as thoroughly as this thesis allows, as well as bring a unique perspective to the problem of deviant burial.
